While at Gebbie's, he had met Ainsworth Rand Spofford, well-known compiler of almanacs and encyclopedias, and the longest serving head of the Library of Congress. Spofford chose Finley and Company to publish, in 1894 and 1895, "The Library of Historic Characters," a ten-volumn set, and other tomes.
After a financial downturn and news of pancreatic cancer, William comitted suicide at his home.
