Spencer News Herald, Spencer, Iowa, November 26, 1931. MRS. MARY CUSTER, CORNELL, IOWA, NOVEMBER 23 Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Custer, 75 years of age, died Sunday morning November 22, 1931, at 1 o'clock at the home of her son, George H. Hughes of near Cornell. Death followed a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Hughes home, and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church at Nemaha, where burial was made. Mary Elizabeth Geary, daughter of James and Nancy Jane Geary, was born February 8, 1856, in Johnson county, Iowa. There she grew to young womanhood and was united in marriage April 13, 1879, to George W. Hughes. To this union were born four children, George M. Hughes of Cornell, Harvey C. Hughes, of Davenport, Mrs. Carrie F. Evans of Marion, Iowa and William W., who died in infancy. Mr. Hughes passed away in 1887. On 5/22/1893 she was married to Alonzo B. Custer and to this union a daughter was born, Mrs. Lucy Kisby of Glenwood, Iowa, who has been in faithful attendance at her mother's bedside during her long illness. In 1897, Mr. Custer died. In early life, Mrs. Custer was a faithful attendant of the Evangelical church, and in later years attended the Methodist church. For the past twenty years, she has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. George M. Hughes, moving to Cornell with them about two years ago from Iowa City.
