Benjamin Dart was a successful local merchant during the time of the American Revolution. He settled in or near Charles Town in the early to middle 1700s. He married his second wife Amelia Hext of John’s Island on January 18, 1749. They had a several children, no sons survived him.

He first supported the American cause in the War for Independence, and then opposed it. He died in 1782 before the end of the War; this spared his family from having his assets confiscated. He owned several properties on John's Island, near Charleston.
