In 1975 he became a member of the Scalf Chapel Pentecostal Church. Eugene worked hard all of his life, quitting school at age 16 to start driving a truck, when his father became ill with a heart condition. He worked the same job until he retired at 65.
Survivors include his wife of 47 and half years Maria Jewell (Ledington) Smith, four sons Eugene Smith Jr. & wife Charlotte, Wendell Berneil Smith, Donald Gene Smith & wife Shelia, James Anthony Smith & wife Jeanette, eight grandchildren Deloris Wilson & husband Dr. Bruce Wilson, Catherine Smith, Wendell William Smith, & wife Angie (Cox) Smith, Tabitha Marie Wagers & husband Edward, Patrick Spencer Smith, Wendell Berneil Smith, Zachary Chase Smith, and one more little miracle grandson Evan Dakota Smith, and nine great grandchildren.
Besides his parents Eugene was preceded in death by his first wife Mary (Ross) Smith, Mother of sons Eugene Jr. & Wendell Smith, one sister Louisa (Smith) Gambrel, one brother Noble Smith, one grandson Cecil James (Bo)Smith.
The family of Eugene would also like to give special 'thanks" to Wilma Holt for her kind and loving help during his long illness.
Funeral services for Eugene Smith will be conducted on Tuesday-November 22nd, 2011 @ 1:00 p.m. in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sylvester Dunn & Rev. Denvil Taylor officiating. Music & songs will be by Debra Oris & Cheryl Ledington. Pallbearers will be grandsons Patrick Smith, Zachary Smith, Wendell William Smith, great-grand William Lee Smith, good friends Jessie Smith, F C Smith, and Jim Boone Smith. Honorary Pallbearers are J. M. Carnes, Danny Daniels, Paul Calhoun, Steven Bingham, and Ronnie Holt Sr.
Burial will follow in the Cumberland Memorial Gardens at Lily. Hampton Funeral Home will be in charge of all arrangements.
