Mary's mother wrote: "After she got well my father took her to Columbia, Tuolomne county, where my sister, Mrs. Cummings, lived, and she spent the remainder of her days there in attending school. She died September first, 1863, of typhoid fever, aged 15 years and nine months. Though naturally bright, cheerful and self-reliant she bore her afflictions with patience and even with gayety, amusing and tending the younger children when suffering herself." -- Juliet Foster Olmsted, "Foster Family California Pioneers 1849," page 256

Mary J. Olmsted - interred 9-1-63, female, age 15, native - California, grave 155 - cause of death - typhoid fever

The "Columbia Burial Ground" is today's "Columbia Public Cemetery." However, grave #s from this listing do not match with known numbering systems, and burials from this time frame typically had no headstones. It is unknown where in the cemetery Mary's grave actually is located.
