Augusta, GA – Anne Claussen Barton, 89, entered into rest on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 with the Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger and the Rev. Robert D. Fain officiating.

Mrs. Barton is survived by her children, Raymond O. “Rocky” Barton (Jane), John C. Barton (Jo), and Catherine Barton Clarke; her grandchildren, T.J. Barton, Raymond Barton, Krissie Barton, Daniel Clarke, Ben Barton, and Mattie Barton; and by her two great-grandchildren, Marshall and Andrew Barton. She was preceded in death by her son, Henry “Hank” Claussen Barton.

Anne graduated from Tubman High School For Girls, attended Mary Baldwin College and graduated from UGA with a BFA. She was a former Chairman of the March of Dimes Mothers Walk, a member of the Sundial Garden Club and of Phi Mu Sorority at UGA.

After her 4 children were grown, she began developing her artistic talents more actively, especially as a sculptor and jewelry maker. She became artist in residence at Augusta College and with the UGA Studies Abroad Program, Cortona, Italy. She was awarded “Best of Show” at the First Depot Festival in Thomson, Ga and had juried shows from Atlanta, GA, to La Spezia, Italian Riviera. She eventually moved to Cortona, Italy, where she lived and worked for over 10 years. Her sculptures in bronze and terra cotta can be found in many Augusta homes and gardens, galleries in Atlanta and Lerici, Italy, and in private collections throughout the U.S., Italy and Germany.

Anne’s creative endeavors remained through most of her life, from old dollhouses to vintage and antique furniture restorations.

The friendships she treasured were many and varied. Her joy and interest in the world around her drew people to her wherever she lived and from all walks of life.
