Noble County History, 1887, p. 266: "Company H, 161st O.N.G., mustered in May 9, 1864, at Camp Chase, Ohio, for one hundred days. Mustered out September 2, 1864, at Camp Chase, Ohio. Private James Keller, 18[16], e. May 2, 1864;m.o.c."

In a letter from (Benjamin) Harrison Kellar in Caldwell, OH written to son, John Francis Kellar (Seventh Company, Independent Ohio Cavalry) dated May 8, 1864: "...John Kellar's boy ran away and went in the company from here as a substitute for Jack Severs..."

Ohio 1870 census, Enoch Twp., Noble Co.: James Keller, age 21, farmer, is living with wife, Harriet, age 21 and daughter, Elsie M., age 1. The neighbors on the census list are: 1.) John and Mary Ann Kellar; 2.) James and Belle Zora Williams; 3.) ChristopherDyer; 4.) Abraham Harper (33 yrs.) and John (38 yrs.) Harper; and, 5.) George Dyer.

West Virginia 1880 Federal Population Census, Jackson Co., all districts: The family (the spelling is Keller) is living here after marrying Matilda in November 1879. James, age 31; Matilda, age 21; Maude, age 12; George M., age 10; John, age 7; Mary, age 2.Brother John, age 25 and Mary, age 21, also live in the county with children, Leora/Leona M., age 4 and son Pearl F., age 1. All were born in OH except Pearl, born in WV. [See John Kellar and Mary Elizabeth Clark.]

Obituary: "JAMES KELLAR IS CLAIMED BY DEATH -- James Kellar, aged 78 years, Civil War veteran, prominent resident of Warner, father of Mrs. Robert W. Knox, of Second Street, and John B. Kellar, of Phillips Street, died at his home in Warner on Tuesday eveningat 7 o'clock. Death was due to arteriosclerosis. Funeral services will be held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Universalist Cemetery at Lower Salem.
Mr. Kellar was born on a farm near Caldwell on September 25, 1848, the eldest son of the late John and Mary Ann Kellar. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Civil War and served in Company H, 161st Ohio Volunteers Infantry in the battle of Lynchburg and otherengagements. He was honorably discharged September of 1864.
Mr. Kellar was twice married. His first wife, Mrs. Harriet J. Hupp Kellar, passed away in 1879 leaving four children. He later married Miss Tilly MaGee, who survives with the sons and daughters, John B. Kellar and Mrs. Edna Knox of Marietta, Mrs. William H.Klintworth of Tulsa, Okla; Mrs. J.H. Lauer of Newport, and Frank Kellar of Warner. There are 10 grandchildren. Brothers and sisters of the deceased are W.H. Kellar of Caldwell and Mrs. Belle Williams of Middleburg.
Mr. Kellar was a member of the John M. Mosley Post, G.A.R., Department of Ohio. In his early life he was a member of the Methodist church at Dexter City."
