Robert served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24L #44-49041, 344th Bomber Squadron, 98th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.


He resided in Portage County, Ohio prior to the war.


He enlisted in the Army on January 27, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.


B-24L #44-49041 took off, as the lead bomber in a bomber group, from Lecce, Italy on a bombing mission over the Avisio Viaduct near Trento, Italy. The B-24 was hit by German ground anti-aircraft flak which sheared the tail section off causing them to crash. No parachutes were seen by other witnesses.


Robert was "Killed In Action" in this crash.


He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Gravesite Details

His remains, along with the 5 others shown on his headstone, were found by the brother of Captain DeBottis (see his link for more) after the war. They were recovered in May, 1956 and identified. He was repatriated here on June 27, 1957.
