J. Everett Hughes
J. Everett Hughes was born in Rhodes, Marshall county, Iowa, In 1887, Jan. 2, to Henry Clay Hughes and Jennie Hampton Hughes, and departed from this life March 7, 1954, at the age of 67 years, two months, and five days.

When young, his parents moved to Dody county, Nebraska, where his father worked on a farm for several years; from there they moved to Afton, Iowa, where his father bought a farm, but only lived there two years and moved to Oklahoma and took up a claim with the opening of the Cherokee Strip.

His parents joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints during their young married life in Rhodes, Iowa. Through the efforts of his parents and missionaries who came in and preached, quite a large branch of the church was organized at Morrison, Okla. His father was the president of this branch for many years, and Everett spent his boyhood and young manhood there.

He had one brother, Leroy, now deceased and two sisters, Athalia Loar of Mapleton, Kan., and Ada Atkins of Klamath Falls, Ore. They all became members of the church in their youth.

On Feb. 13, 1910, at Ripley, Okla., Brother Hughes was ordained to the office of Priest and on April 10, 1912, at Independence, Mo., he was ordained again to the office of Elder. He spent three years in the missionary field but because of failing health he had to quit this work and he returned to the farm.

He was united in marriage to Bina Vida Atkins and to this union were born four children: Edith Velma (deceased), Jennie Alice Napkins of Des Moines, Hollie Everett of Lamoni, and Glenn Lee of Grand River.

Also, those to mourn his passing are six grandchildren: Ronald, Linda, Shirley, and Carolyn Hopkins; and Diana and Dennis Hughes.

His main interests centered around his home, family, and church. Everett was a kind and loving father and was loved by all who knew him.

Services were held at the Marsh funeral chapel Tuesday afternoon with interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
