John Shelley was the son of Peter M. Shelley and Jane Shy. He married Sarah (Sallie) Ann Davis, the daughter of Reverend Absalom Davis and Allie Fair Guffy. Per notes by Vada Sutton of Bell County, Texas, "John Shelley and his wife Sallie Ann Davis died one day apart and are buried in a common grave near Sherman, Texas. This occurred while on their way to Texas. One of their daughters (Jane Parmer) stated that the reason they were coming to Texas was to get out of the Civil War.
Regarding John and Sallie's deaths, their son Peter's descendants documented that in the Fall of 1861 the family started for Texas, driving overland until they reached Fannin County. Both parents died there, the mother one night, July 31, 1863, and the father the next day, August 1, 1863, and they were buried in the same grave at Sherman, Texas.
