Berenice Barry Steele Duncan was one of the children born to Thomas Fearn Steele and his wife Mary Lovie Eliza Sproles. Berenice graduated from Tulane University with a degree in art in 1915.

Berenice was united in marriage in April 1919 in Greenwood, Mississippi to Brooke Helm Duncan. Berenice and Brooke were blessed with the birth of at least three children during their marriage:
