He was the son of Anna Parsons and Sherlock Ives of Berlin, St. Clair, Michigan. They were farmers who came from Ellisburg, Jefferson, New York.

In enlisted in the Union Army as a private with the 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics. He was captured August 8, 1864 and sent to Cahaba Prison, then transferred to Andersonville Prison.

After being released from prison, he boarded the steamboat "Sultana" bound for Cincinnati on the Mississippi River. He was killed in an explosion on the ship along with more than 1,500 others. His body was never recovered.
