Jesse Pittman Boyles was born on June 5, 1883 in Lincoln Co., North Carolina. He was the son of Rev. Marcus Wrightman "M.W." Boyles (1842-1892) and Susan A. (Alice ?) Wood (1846-1895), the ninth of their ten known children. Jesse's parents, who were also born in Lincoln County, are buried in the Lexington City Cemetery in Lexington, Davidson Co., NC.

Jesse's father, Marcus, was an "old-time" Methodist Episcopal (M. E.) circuit preacher. He was the son of Rev. Josiah Adolphus Boyles (1816-1894) and Anna Elizabeth "Annie" Yount (1819-1905). Both of Marcus' parents were born in Lincoln Co., NC and both died in Burke Co., NC. They are buried in the Salem Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) Church Cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co., NC. Jesse's paternal grandfather, Josiah (aka Joseph), and his paternal great-grandfather, John Boyles II (1770-1843), were also "old-time" Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) preachers.

Jesse's mother, Susan, was the daughter of Samuel Yount (1790-1860) and Catherine Lutz (1797-1869). They too, were born in Lincoln County, lived and died there. They are buried there in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Vale, Lincoln Co., NC.

Early in his work career Jesse was a bookkeeper for the Greensboro National Bank. By 1917, he was in Norfolk, Virgina, working as a "ship foreman" on the military base there.

Jesse, who never married, was just 37 when he died on May 21, 1921. He passed away in Norfolk, Virginia. His death certificated shows him dying of "unknown causes". Jesse is buried in the Lexington City Cemetery in Lexington, Davidson Co., North Carolina, next to his parents. His marker appears to be a replacement.
