My grandmother, Hilda Ukens Grett, took me out to the cemetery on one of our many visits to Hudson when I was a young adult. Even though she was only 7 at the time of her grandfather's death she remembered his funeral. He was buried in his military uniform with all his medals and they shot off "cannons" at the gravesite. Being so young it was probably just rifle shots for a military salute, but it sounded like cannons to her.
