Ralph E. ZIlly -
Tiverton,RI -- Ralph E. Zilly,78,of Mallard Lane, died at home Thursday, July 8,1999. He was the husband of Dorothy B. (Davenport) Zilly. Born in Aurora,IL, son of the late John Sam and Sophie (Krieg) Zilly, he spent his youth in Aurora. He moved to Barrington in 1955 and to State College,PA, in 1968. He returned to Rhode Island in 1995, settling in Tiverton.
He was a 1939 graduate of East Aurora High School and a 1943 graduate of North Western University, receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration; he received an honorary master's degree from Brown University in 1955. During his high school and college careers, he was a tackle on the first string of the football team.
Mr. Zilly was employed as a purchasign agent at a cutting tool manufacturing company in New Bedford, MA, before becoming director of purchases and special services at Brown University from 1955 to 1968, adn a vice president of financial affairs at Penn. State University from 1968 to 1995.
Mr. Zilly was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving mostly in the Philippines. He was a lieutenant in the supply corps attached to the 105th Naval Construction Battalion.
He enjoyed woodworking, reading and genealogy research.
Mr. and Mrs. Zilly were married 54 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Deborah B. Woodworth of East Lime,CT, and Pamela D. Zilly Schaefer of New York City; three sisters, Florence Brauer adn Marie Hessling, both of Aurora, and Peggy Aiels of Lakeland,FL; a brother, Kenneth Zilly of Aurora; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Samuel Zilly, Ella Zilly and Carl Zilly.
His funeral will be at noon Monday in the "Cherry Place" Home of Waring-Sullivan-Ashton-Coughlin-Driscoll, 178 Winter St., Fall River, MA; burial will be in Union Cemetery, Little Compton.
