Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” November 14, 1949:
JIMMIE D HUDGENS.
Jimmie Dwight Hudgens, 44, a former Ottumwan and a veteran of World War II, died at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Veteran’s hospital in Des Moines. He had been ill but for a few days and was taken to Des Moines Saturday.
An army veteran of 24 years, he received medical treatment two years ago. Meanwhile, he had been employed at the Veteran’s hospital at Knoxville.
The son of John E. and Sarah Leonard Hudgens, he was born in Ottumwa June 23, 1905 [sic]. He enlisted in the service in 1925, and was a first technical sergeant in the signal corps in the Pacific. During the war he was stationed in the Panama canal zone.
Survivors include his wife, Goldie; two sons, John Hudgens, Kewanee, Ill., and Kenneth Hudgens in the navy; a stepson, F.E. Perry, Clinton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Curtis Ferguson, LeClaire; four brothers, Evan Hudgens and Porter Hudgens, both of Ottumwa, Howard Hudgens, Davenport, and Henry Hudgens, Kansas City, Kan., and two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Hamilton, Ottumwa, and Mrs. Susie Kametz, Albia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Emmett.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of the Rev. Donald H. Gill of First Christian church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. O.B. Nelson post, American Legion, will conduct a military service at the grave.
