He was a native of Chicago, IL and most recently moved from Winchester, VA. He is preceded in death by his parents, John C. Bonnell, II and Thora S. Bonnell of Allentown, NJ.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years, Barbara A. Curtis Bonnell of Arlington, VA; children, John C. Bonnell, III., D. Lee Bonnell and Stuart W. Bonnell of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, W. Robert Bonnell of Highstown, NJ; and a sister, T. Jean Coletti of Burlington, NJ. Two of his beloved grandchildren, Kyle W. and Briana M. Bonnell reside in Chesapeake.
John worked as a Senior Air Conditioning Engineering Technician with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. and retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Winchester, VA after 37 years of service. Master Sergeant Bonnell retired with 22 years of faithful service from the USMCR, in 1968. He first served in infantry, then engineers during Korea and later in aviation maintenance, with VMF-321 in Washington D.C.
John was a member and deacon with Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, a life member of the John A. Lejeune Detachment, Marine Corps League, the Military Order of Devil Dogs, the Fleet Reserve Association, the American Legion and a life member of the DAV. John was active in the BSA for over 40 years and held the BSA Silver Beaver Award for his service to boys in Fairfax City, VA. Through the years he volunteered with the Nokesville, VA, Fairfax City, VA and Clearbrook, VA Volunteer Fire Departments. He was a historian, wrote a book about his maternal grandfather's Civil War exploits in the Shenandoah Valley, and was a past member of the Board of Directors for the Winchester/Fairfax County Historical Society. As a representative of the MCL, he was a six year active member of the Governor's Joint Leadership Council of Veteran Service Organizations, where he assisted in the preparation of Virginia Veterans Legislation.
A funeral service was held 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 13, at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church. Burial with full military honors was held at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veteran Cemetery. The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel handled arrangements.
