While stationed aboard the USS Charleston (C-22) that was off the coast of Olongapo in the Philippines' Manila Bay, he was partaking in a morning target practice training session when the breechblock to Gun #3 had suddenly exploded as it made its sixth shot; he, five other sailors & a Marine would lost their lives immediately, while another sailor would pass away from his injuries the following day.
He was temporarily interred at the former Naval Cemetery in Cavite, Philippines until he was returned to his hometown on June 29th.
