LETTS, Iowa — Alvin Howard “Al” Crooks, 88, of Letts died Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, 2015, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. The son of Howard and Ruth Ann Dickinson Crooks, he was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Sumner, Iowa. Al married Anna M. Young on Aug. 23, 1953, in Wapello, Iowa.

He graduated from Nashua High School in 1945. Alvin served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He farmed for a few years, and then did farm tiling and backhoe work for many years, followed by repairing small engines and hydraulic jacks. He enjoyed working, and especially enjoyed restoring antique tractors.

His family includes his wife, Anna; five daughters, Marie Blanchard, Muscatine, Karen and Dennis Steinke, Muscatine, Sue Crooks, Walcott, Iowa, Judy Crooks, Wapello, and Linda and David Arnold, Wapello; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a sister, Iva Meany, Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; a sister; and a brother.

The funeral ceremony for Alvin Crooks will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, with the Rev. Marsha Gerot officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. The family will gather and meet friends 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the funeral Saturday.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of Letts United Methodist Church, and the Mercy Hospice of Iowa City.
