Abraham M. Papa Chacon, 91, of Silver City passed away Friday at his home in Silver City. Mr. Chacon was born March 16, 1902, to Marcos M. and Sara (Molina) Chacon in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Chacon came to Grant County from El Paso in the early 1920s to play saxophone and clarinet with the Santa Rita Company Band. In June 1932, he married Josefa Pedraza in Santa Rita. He retired as a driller from Chino Mines in 1967 after 40 year of service. Mr. Chacon took a great interest in music, passing down his musical talents to his daughter, Consuelo. He was also an avid gardener, and for many years shared his wealth of produce with his family and friends. One of his greatest attributes was his compassion toward his fellow man, as he spent many hours visiting sick friends and acquaintances. Mr. Chacon is survived by three sons, Augustine V. Chacon and his wife, Elvira, of Mimbres, Jesus P. Chacon and his wife, Lupe, of Bayard, and Gaspar P. Chacon and his wife, Teresa, of Santa Fe; three daughters, Rosa Arvizo of Fort Bayard, Consuelo Ryan and her husband, Thomas, of Silver City, and Lupe Ornelas and her husband, Victor, of Silver City; a sister, Vicenta Fillon of Los Angeles; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josefa Chacon, on March 30, 1991; a daughter, Catalina Alirez, in 1983; a granddaughter, Eva Ornelas in 1976; a brother, Marcos Chacon, in 1980; and a brother, Trinidad Chacon, in 1985. The prayer vigil was held at 7 Sunday evening at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Silver City with Deacon Johnny Perez reciting the rosary. The funeral liturgy was held at 11:30 this morning with the Rev. George Reynolds officiating at St. Vincent's. The rite of committal followed at the Catholic Cemetery in Silver City.
