With a beautiful blue moon to light her way, Virginia Francis Lebkisher, Vancouver, WA, passed away at home in Vancouver, Washington on July 31, 2015, following a brief illness. She was 102 years old. In keeping with her wishes, no visitation or funeral is planned. Virginia was born September 2, 1912, in Davenport, Iowa. She was the daughter of Peter James Hammill and Emma Schmidt Hammill. Her paternal grandparents were John Henry Hammill and Elizabeth Rafferty Hammill. Her maternal grandparents were George Richard Schmidt and Kate Dufendorfer Schmidt. Her early years were spent in Saskatchewan, Canada, where her family farmed. Virginia graduated from Grant High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

During World War II, Virginia worked for Shell Oil Company in Long Beach, California.

She married Charles William "Bill" Lebkisher on January 29, 1944. They moved to Vancouver, Washington in 1946. They slept on the floor for months while building their home on the property where Virginia was still living until her death.

She worked for the State of Oregon for 28 years in the Department of Human Services and later at Portland State College in Portland, Oregon in the School of Social Work. She retired in 1964.

Virginia enjoyed gardening and sharing a good story over a cup of coffee. She was a conservationist, beachcomber, supporter of womenrights, and political activist. To those who knew and loved her, she was Simply Amazing!

Those left to honor her memory include three nephews: Gary Douglas Hammill, Montana, Kal Hammill, Iowa, and Matt Hammill, Iowa; two nieces, Carol Hammill, Iowa and Jean M. Hammill, Iowa; cousin, Patty Hammill, Camas, Washington, who helped care for her; several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and many wonderful friends and neighbors.

The family extends special thanks to Kim Bailey, her long-term caregiver and the caring doctors and nurses at Kaiser Permanente.
