This is a cenotaph. Edward is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. (Find a Grave #49126881)
He was a recruit, enlisted for 3rd Vermont Light Artillery, but apparently at the New Haven, CT recruit depot was assigned to Co. E., 1st Vermont Cavalry (not an uncommon thing). He was hospitalized October 1st at Mt. Pleasant General Hospital, Washington, and died there October 20th, of "Hemorrhage of bowels" after suffering dysentery for at least the last 20 days.
