Editor of Norwalk Gazette newspaper. US Consul to Naples, 1897 to 1907. Was active in organizing troops in Washington at the outbreak of the Civil War, and had many conferences with President Abraham Lincoln during the war. He was made an honorary member of the 17th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, for his services.

Obituary appeared in the Hartford Courant of Dec. 30, 1910.
