Baby Jim was an unexpected joy in his family with much older siblings. His niece Jean, two years older than he was, called him her "Little Uncle" and they played together when they were children. One of Jean's fondest memories is of the two of them galloping their horses across the Kansas prairie several miles away to visit Jim's sister and Jean's aunt Dot.

Jim married Norma Neaderhiser September 14, 1957, at Manchester, Dickinson County, Kansas. They lived in Salina, Kansas for some time. In the 1960 Salina Directory George L Emrich is listed as a salesman for Manor Baking, wife Norma E is a bookkeeper for Hillcrest Homes, Inc. When they divorced in the early 1990's Jim began a self-imposed estrangement from his siblings. They tried to reach out, but it went on for years without contact with him. His sister Lorene finally broke through to him. After many hugs, lots of conversation and Jim's apologies, she felt she had her brother back.

Jim and his companion Jamie, were living at Glasco, KS, at the time of his death. They met while both were custodians at a nursing home. By pooling their Social security benefits they were able to make ends meet for 23 years together.
