Ike" helped develop his father's Iowa farm from 1866 - c1874, then was brought into the U.S. railway mail service by his brother T.N. Vail, working in Utah and Wyoming. Around 1895, he became the manager of brother T.N. Vail's 2,500 acre farm at Lyndonville, VT.
Ike Vail enjoyed a wanderer's life in Vermont during his later years. As of 1920, he was in Montgomery, VT, boarding with a Mrs.Hattie Haile (and supported by a $20,000 trust fund set up in T.N. Vail's will). He died at tiny Stockbridge in mid - winter, and was interred nearby the following Spring by members of the Masonic Lodge of Bethel, VT.
