Carl Collins, 87, of Newman lost his battle with gallbladder cancer at 4:08 p.m. Thursday (May 15, 2014) in the home he loved, surrounded by family.
Carl Morris Collins was born May 13, 1927, in Jasper County, Ill., son of the late Walter Scott Collins and Thelma Grace (Fitch) Collins. He married Rita Murphy on April 2, 1953.
Carl is survived by his wife of 61 years; daughters, Carla (David) Carroll of Bolingbrook and Jill (Rick) Eastin of Newman; grandchildren, Randa (Matt) Clark of Rolling Meadows, Beth (Jon) Heldmann of Bolingbrook, Abigail (Jeremiah) Hall of Paris and Clark (Abby) Eastin of Paris; great-grandchildren, Miles and Dylan Clark, Natalie and Nathan Heldmann, Dalton and Greta Hall, and Max and Knox Eastin.
He was preceded in death by his son-by-marriage, Richard Eastin; three brothers, Charles, Albert and John Lyle; and sister, Beulah Alde Lahti.
Carl attended First Christian Church of Newman. He was a member of Stanton Burgett American Legion Post 201, Newman Masonic Lodge 369 and Newman Lions Club.
He graduated from Casey High School in 1941 and Eastern Illinois University in 1944 with a degree in industrial arts.
Carl served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Italy.
He was a teacher of industrial arts at Newman High School and fifth and sixth grades at Murdock Elementary School. After seven years of teaching he began a career in banking with First State Bank of Newman, now known as First Neighbor Bank, serving as president from 1979 until retiring in 1994. He continued to serve as director emeritus for First Neighborhood Bancshares, Inc.
He also served his community in the offices of Newman city clerk, Newman Township clerk, Newman Republican precinct committeeman, Douglas County Veterans Assistance Commission, and C.U.S.D. No. 303 treasurer and school board member.
Carl loved life and nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, camping, woodworking and gardening.
A talented athlete, he earned the honor of induction into the Casey Baseball Hall of Fame.
His favorite times were spent camping with his family. They were always the most important part of his life.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Joines-Appleby Funeral Home in Newman. Rev. Ben Williamson will officiate, with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 201.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m.
