A lamentable accident happened here Sunday evening about seven o'clock when Edward Warn, a High School student and only son of Mrs. Orlin Warn, fell beneath a freight train and was crushed to death. Just how the accident happened is unknown as no one was near the scene at the time, the first discovery being made when the crew of the hill engine, starting on the return trip to north McGregor, saw an object on the track just east of the main street crossing. On stopping they found the remains of the body severed in two at the waist, lying on either side of the south rail of the track. Undertaker Kruse was notified and the remains were taken to his parlors, where they were carefully prepared for burial and afterward taken to the home of the grief stricken mother. The supposition is that Edward, who had left his home but a few minutes before the accident, had climbed to the top of the train standing on the track, and as it started to move had fallen between two cars, where the train passed over him
He was 16 years of age, was born and raised in Monona, and was the hope of his widowed mother, who had exerted every means to educate and fit him for a bright career, that he might be a comfort to her in her old age. But the hope has vanished, and she has now only the memory of his childish career and the profound sympathy of the community to comfort her in her hour of desolation.
The funeral was held at St. Patrick's church, Wednesday morning, Nov. 3, attended by his schoolmates and a host of sympathetic relatives and friends. The body was laid to rest beside the father in the Catholic cemetery.-Monona Leader.
