MELVIN H. BURKARD, age 86, of Worthington, died Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Sunset Hospice Cottage in Worthington. He was born December 1, 1928, in St. Kilian, to John and Victoria (Spahn) Burkard. He attended St. Kilian School and graduated from St. Columbia High School in Iona.

Melvin married Elizabeth “Betty” Wolf on October 12, 1950, at St. Adrian Catholic Church. After their marriage, the couple farmed northwest of St. Kilian. They retired and moved to Worthington in 1995. Melvin & Betty enjoyed spending the last twenty four years wintering in Mesa, AZ.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Worthington; a fifty year member of the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus in Lismore; the Wilmont Township Board; Lismore Telephone Board; the Wilmont Farmers Elevator Board; and St. Kilian Parish Council. Melvin enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golfing, bowling and having coffee with friends. He especially loved seeing his grandchildren & great grandchildren.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Betty Burkard, Worthington; six children, Barb (Rollie) Walter, Iroquois, SD; Rodney (JoAnn) Burkard, Reading; Michael (Connie) Burkard, Sioux Falls, SD; Duane (Kathy) Burkard, Wilmont; Brian (Shelly) Burkard, Albert Lea; and Scott (partner, Tim Tack) Burkard, Lodi, CA; seventeen grandchildren, Ryan (Char) Walter, Reed Walter, Aaron Walter, Andrea (Gavin) Utesch, Michelle (Scott) Brunk, Rachel (Jake) Ziegler, Rodney (Dawna) Burkard, Janelle (Scott) Schettler, Kelli (Jordan) Brake, Nicole (Aaron) Schultz, Kristi (Gabe) Laber, Kerri (Ryan) DeGraff, Matt Burkard, Eric (Fiancée, Laura Clark) Nathan Burkard, Alex Burkard & Derek Burkard; fourteen great grandchildren, Makayla, Kaitlyn, Riley, Grace, Nicholas, Mason, Alaina, Natalie, Liam, Brayden, Briley, Adelyn, Juliet & Carly; brother, John (Jean) Burkard, Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law, Joan Wolf, Clara City; two brothers-in-law, Joe (Joanne) Wolf, Adrian; and Emanuel (Helen) Wolf, Adrian; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Nicholas Burkard, in 1988; brother, Donald Burkard; and a sister, Leila Moser.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington with parish prayers at 7 pm and the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus rosary to follow. Visitation also from 10 to 11 am Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Worthington. Funeral Mass will be 11 am Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, in Worthington, officiated by Fr. James Callahan & Deacon Vern Behrends. Burial will be after the meal at 1:30 pm Wednesday at St. Kilian Cemetery in St. Kilian.
