SAMARIA ~ Jacob Slack died at his home in Bartholomew county and was buried at Lick Spring last Thursday. Over fifty years ago he lived in Hensley. He was 85 years and 7 months old. He was a brother of the late John and Reason Slack of Hensley. These brothers were among the very first settlers of this township and from them have grown a very large and influential family. Uncle Jacob taught school for over 40 years. In those days were used in the schools, Webster’s elementary spelling book, Olney and Mitchell’s geography, English reader, Kirkham and Butler’s grammar, Pike and Smiley’s arithmetic etc. In the log school house 60 years ago did Uncle Jacob reign in profound respect. He is gone, but an interesting life in the wilderness did he live.
