James, a life-long resident at Sidney, died at The Hospital after a short illness. He was the son of Marcus A. Gager and Sarah Jane Hodges Gager. He married to Jessie Underwood on 15 March 1909. They had no children. He was a sawyer at Lloyd’s Mill in his early youth but, like his father before him, was a farmer most of his life. He was a member of Franklin Methodist Church, International Order of Odd Fellows, and Rebekah Lodge at Unadilla.
