From James Rankin's deposition: "Allen Co., KY - 14 May, 1833, before Asher W. Graham, Judge of Allen Co. Circuit Court, James R. Alexander aged 76 deposes: I was born in the state of Pennsylvania and was living in Cecil Co., Maryland when called into service. Has since lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC and Allen (late Warren Co.), and in 1776 enlisted as private in the company of Capt. Walter Alexander in the "Maryland Flying Camp". Was immediately appointed sergeant for his company. Discharged about Dec. 1, 1776 and commenced the study of medicine; he returned to his father's in NC. In May 1780 volunteered as a surgeon to care for those who had survived the taking of Charleston, SC and the Massacre of Col. Buford's VA Regt. by Tarlton. Continued in the service till Oct. 14, 1780 and then he was appointed surgeon to a regiment of militia raised in Mecklenburg Co., NC, commanded by Col. Wm. L. Hudson, Dandons/ Served till about Feb. or March of 1781."
