John married Ona Susie Marshall, an Angelina County, Texas native, on December 7, 1916 in Jefferson County, Texas. They divorced some time after the 1930 census. Their only child was daughter Johnnie May Aull, born October 15, 1917 and who died on April 10, 1935. John was worked as an "oil man".
He died while a patient in Hermann Hospital in Houston. His death was due to tuberculous meningitis.
He was buried in South Park Cemetery on September 11, 1950.
