Nathan Johnson was born June 2, 1825 in Tennessee. He had a brother John M. Johnson who went west in 1850. His last letter to Nathan was April 14, 1850 sent to the Jackson Post Office, Madison County, Tennessee from Indianola, Texas. He was never heard from again. Because of the letter, it has been assumed throughout the years that Nathan was born in Jackson or nearby in Madison County, TN. Without knowing the names of his father and mother, it is difficult to know where his family was from, although in later census, he indicated that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in North Carolina.

On September 14, 1847, he married Nancy Lisa Goodrich. She was born May 11, 1830 and died December 25, 1847 at the age of 17. Possibly married in Madison County, TN.

On November 30, 1854, he married Margaret Sarah Neely, who was born August 11, 1830, in Henderson County, Tennessee. She was a daughter of Robert P. Neely and Mary L. Burton Neely. Nathan and Margaret had three daughters. Jessie Alice Johnson was born September 23, 1855 and died October 24, 1859 at age 4. Elizabeth Johnson was born in 1856. She was on the 1860 census living with her grandmother Mary L Neely and her sister Nannie Margaret. The census indicated she was 4 years old. In the 1870 census after Nathan Johnson married Eleanor Elizabeth Johnson, there is no mention of Elizabeth. She would have been 14 in 1870 so she must have died between the 1860 and 1870 census. Nannie Margaret Johnson was born October 11, 1859 in Whiteville, Hardeman County, Tennessee. The two daughters, Jessie Alice and Elizabeth are buried in Whiteville, TN in the Reverend Thomas Jefferson Neely Family cemetery along with Nathan's wife, Margaret, who died May 26, 1860.

Meanwhile the Civil War had started on April 12, 1861. Nathan served in the Confederate Army probably in Logwood's 16th Calvary as it had recruits from Hardeman County.

On June 2, 1861, Nathan married his second wife's sister, Eleanor Elizabeth (Ellen) Neely, who was born January 14, 1837 in Tennessee, also a daughter of Robert P. Neely and Mary L. Burton Neely.

In 1873, Nannie Margaret now age 14, moved with her father and her aunt/stepmother to Texas along with her half-siblings, Thomas Edward age 8 and Sarah Jane age 3. Nathan and Ellen left behind two daughters Narsisa E born May 30, 1864, died August 24, 1865 and Darthula F born April 13, 1869, died September 06, 1870 buried in the same cemetery with Margaret, his second wife and Eleanor's sister and half siblings Jessie Alice and Elizabeth. They had three more children: Anna E, born March 19, 1870 in Whiteville, Tennessee; Nathan Purdy, born February 13, 1874 in Denton, TX; and Rosa Belle, born January 1877 in Denton, Texas.

Nathan was listed as head of his household in the 1880 and 1900 census records for Denton, Texas, but by 1910, Ellen was head of household as a widow.

Nathan died on June 1, 1903 after having a heart attack and falling out of his buggy. He was on his way to visit his daughter Sarah Jane Laney a few miles outside of Denton. He was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Denton, Texas. Ellen died on November 9, 1912, and was buried beside her husband.
