Records show many spelling variants of his surname including McHugh, McHughs, HcHue, McCue and McHughes. Probate records for his grandfather in Williamson County, Tennessee used the name McHugh. To be consistent with other memorials in Buffalo Cemetery, the surname McHughes is used here.

George Washington McHughes was the oldest son of John and Mary McHughes and grandson of Moses and Jane McHughes of Madison County, Kentucky and Williamson (Lawrence) County, Tennessee. George was born in Lawrence County about 1821 and, after the age of 21, he moved with his parents to Tishomingo County, Mississippi where two of his aunts and one uncle were already living. The family of John McHughes then moved to Newton County, Arkansas between 1851 and 1854.

George first appears in the record books in the 1850 US Census for Tishomingo County, Mississippi under the surname Mchue.

In 1854 George McHughes, along with his brother Moses and father John purchased BLM Land Patents in White Township, Newton County. These lands were on the south side of the road when traveling SE out of Mt Judea. All three men were listed as residents of Newton County at the time of purchase.

In 1857 George McHughes purchased an additional 80 acres of BLM land 2 miles SW of Parthenon and an additional 40 acres in 1859. Finally, in 1875 he purchased an additional 160 acres of BLM land that was just touching the NW corner of the 40 acre purchased in 1859. This gave George 280 acres of land SW of Parhthenon in Hudson Twp.

In 1860 George, age 40 and still single, was living in White Twp with his 57 year old widowed mother, Mary.

In 1862 he joined Co. K. First Arkansas Calvery Volunteers (Union). He was discharged early in the war medical reasons. His brother Moses fought for the Confederacy and died in the war.

On 26 Aug 1867 George married Malissa Alvira Owen Harris, widow of Hobart A. Harris who died in the war. Malissa was the daughter of Richard Owen and Emily Moody. In court procedings in Johnson County, George was appointed gurardian of Malissa's two young sons by Hobart Harris. In 1870 George and Malissa were living near Parthenon in Jackson Towhship near the Samuel Hudson place.

George and Malissa had three children together:

1) John H. McHughes, born 27 Mar 1870
2) Mary Jane McHughes, born 4 Jan 1872
3) Edward McHughes, born 1874

According to Newton County genealogy sources, George died in 1877 and was buried in Buffalo Cemetery with no permanent marker. His wife Malissa died in 1884 and was buried near George and a marker errected on her grave.
