Clara Mae Mitchell, 94, of Grant Town, died Oct. 8, 2014. She was born Nov. 16, 1919, in Rickey, Alabama, the daughter of the late Frank Qualls and Queen Esther Qualls-Armstead of Fairmont.

Clara Mitchell is preceded in death by her siblings, James Qualls, formerly of Detroit; Vivian Louise Britton, formerly of Fairmont; Ruby Washington, formerly of Grant Town; Barbara Jean Lee, formerly of Fairmont; Homerzella Grays, formerly of Los Angeles; Edith McConico, formerly of Detroit; Joseph Armstead, formerly of Fairmont; William Armstead, formerly of Detroit; and Robert Armstead, formerly of Fairmont.

She is preceded in death by two of her children, Larry H. Nolan of Detroit, Michigan, and Phyllis Ann Stewart of Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

She is survived by one brother, Clifford Armstead, residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She is survived by two children, Alex Mitchell of Fairmont and Tina Mitchell of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; and her grandchildren, Autumn Jay, Kristen Ben, Danielle Stewart, Matthew Stewart and also Alexa Durisseau; and great-grandchildren, Mia Durisseau and Jarai Durisseau. In addition, she leaves behind missing her a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Clara Mitchell attended Dunbar High School of Fairmont. She lived temporarily in Detroit, Michigan, but returned to Fairmont to care for her mother when she became ill. Clara Mitchell later married Alexander Paul Mitchell on Sept. 17, 1960. Alex and Clara Mitchell resided happily in Grant Town until Alexander Paul Mitchell passed away March 4, 1971.

Clara Mitchell continued to be a loving sister, “favorite aunt,” mother and grandmother, active in the community and children’s schools, and lived there for more than 40 years. She performed domestic work for many years for Mr. Richard Pizatella and family, and others. She enjoyed reciting poems, baking, gardening and reading, and was an excellent conversationalist. She loved helping the elderly and always had an encouraging, uplifting word for someone who needed it.

Clara Mitchell loved the Lord. She joined and was baptized at Temple of Christ Pentecostal Church and was a faithful member for more than 30 years. She attended church service and Bible study with her sister and Evangelist Vivian Louise Britton and other long-term members of this close-knit church family. She was a Primary Class Sunday School Teacher and also an active member of the Usher Board.

When Sister Mitchell taught Sunday school, she would urge the students to “Put on their thinking caps” before answering Sunday School Review Questions.

Sister Mitchell was known for her fresh-baked bread, cakes, dumplings and fried chicken. The aroma would fill the neighborhood, and she would readily share her goods with family and neighbors that she so dearly loved.

Sister Mitchell drove her car independently around Grant Town and Fairmont well into her 80s when, unfortunately, her driving privileges had to be scaled back upon the onset of old age; she was relocated to live with Marvin and Phyllis Stewart of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, temporarily. She resided permanently at Pembrooke Long Term Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in West Chester, Pennsylvania, for the last four years of her life. Clara Mitchell succumbed to complications involving a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and declining health on Oct. 8, 2014.

For I am now ready to be offered and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness. Which The Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8
