Son of Peter Collins from Cornwall, husband of Mary Ann Northey. He left England in 1856, worked in the mines in Pennsylvania for three years before ending up in Mariposa County. He sent for his family in 1862, who, like Edward, came across the Isthmus and then on up to San Francisco, then by way of the boat to Stockton, California, then on a six-horse stage to Mariposa.
The Collins family still owned the original ranch in 1959.
