Veda Faye Dickerson Maples

Veda was born on August 4, 1939 in Panguitch, (Garfield County) Utah to Vernon Udy Dickerson and Nita B. (Hatch) Dickerson. When she was young, her family relocated to Clearfield, UT where she was raised. Veda had a quick smile and a song or a saying for every occasion. She could also whistle like no other and Indian leg wrestle with the best of them. She was proud of who she was and of the schools she attended. She was a proud Davis Dart. When she found out that several of her grandchildren would be attending Davis, she sat them down individually before each entered the 10th grade and taught them the Davis fight song.
Veda married her high school sweet heart, Dr. Ronald H. Iannone, in 1958 and raised their three children, Jeff, Greg and Cynthia in Southern California. While their marriage ended in divorce, both Veda and Ron remained committed to their children. Veda would later marry Dr. Vincent Maples whom she loved dearly and with whom she helped build his chiropractic business.
Veda was extremely talented and could literally do it all. She was the Kool-Aid mom, the neighborhood tooth puller-outer, and the bandage you up when you skinned your knee kind of mom. Before there was Google, there was Veda. Her love language was “giving kind acts of service”. She was an amazing seamstress who would stay up all night sewing her children clothing, whether it was “Hang Ten” shirts for her boys or an Easter dress for Cynthia, they were always “top notch” and with no tags. When her grandchildren started growing up, she shifted to sewing Halloween costumes like Power Rangers, Lion King, Belle (the peasant) from Beauty and Beast, Esmerelda from the Hunch Back of Notre Dame and her very last costume, a Giant Bumble Bee to name just a few. She would not, could not, stand mediocrity. If she was going to do something it had to be done to her high standards and expectations.
Veda was also a Master Baker. From her Celestial brownies, chocolate éclairs, cinnamon rolls, wedding cakes and mints in the early years, to gourmet cupcakes (regular and gluten free) and amazing cheesecakes in all sorts of varieties in the latter years. Every family wedding, birthday, holiday or get together revolved around what “Grammy Veda was bringing for dessert.” When asked why she never set up a gourmet bake shop she would respond, “Then it would be work, I do this out of love.”
Veda was a steadfast member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served faithfully in many callings throughout her life. She truly was a disciple of Jesus Christ and strived every moment of every day to follow the Savior’s example by her actions, not just in her callings – but in her life.
Veda never knew a stranger. Everyone who has known her has come away feeling special. That was one of her gifts; looking out for the “one,” the one who needed a hug or a helping hand, an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or someone who just felt left out. She, like the Savior, always sought out the “One”.
Veda is survived by her 3 children; Jeff (Julie) Iannone of Alta Loma, CA, Greg (Karen) Iannone of Kaysville, UT, and Cynthia (Mark) Clegg of Cedar Hills, UT along with 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings; Verna (Gale) Christensen of Ivins, UT and Daniel Olson of Cheyenne, WY.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Pheasant Point Third Ward Chapel, 3065 North 1300 West, Lehi where family and friends may attend a viewing from 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Clearfield City Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Family Mortuary, Pleasant Grove, Utah.
