Luther was born in Kirby, VT., the son of John Russell, Jr and Eunice Wood. His early boyhood was spent in Kirby and for 40 years he was a resident of Concord. For many years he was a leading merchant, in company with Joseph Woodbury. He married Cordelia Burroughs Apr 13, 1848 in Kirby. They had five children. One died in infancy. In 1862 his wife Cordelia, the four remaining children, and his sister Louisa all died of diptheria within nine days' time, leaving him alone. All are buried in Grove Cemetery.
On Nov 27, 1864 he married Flavilla Spaulding in Concord, Vt. They had three children, two of whom died in infancy. Flavilla died of pneumonia three days after childbirth in March 1876.
Luther then married Lavina Spaulding on Sep 10, 1876 in Concord. They had no children together, but she brought into the marriage an adopted son, Fred Ball Brewer, from a previous marriage. Lavina died in 1880.
On Sep 10, 1881 Luther married a fourth time to Mary C. Hardy. They had one daughter, Katie E. Russell.
Luther is buried on the lot of his brother, Marcus Russell.
