William D. Jones Succumbs at St. Mary's Hospital, Conrad
W.D. Jones, familiarly known and esteemed as just plain "Bill", frontiersman, pioneer stockman, banker, ex-county commissioner of Teton county, and former member of the Montana house of representatives, succumbed yesterday afternoon about 5 o'clock at St. Mary's hospital in Conrad. The end came after a lingering illness which had kept him at the hospital since the 23rd of April, when a chronic heart ailment became suddenly acute. At the time he was assisting moving cattle from his ranch when the attack seized him and he was removed to the Conrad hospital where he has since lain.
Funeral services will be conducted at the M.E. church and at the cemetery will be in charge of Choteau lodge No. 44 A.F. and A.M., of which Mr. Jones had been a member since Sept. 16, 1893. Burial will be in Choteau cemetery and the remains laid to rest beside the bodies of his wife and a son.
He was born in Grandview, Missouri, July 20, 1857. He arrived in Montana, March 10, 1877, coming from Kansas City, Missouri, via Corrine Utah, and landed at Sun River. He followed the life of a ranch hand and cowboy and on the 21st of September 1879, camped with a band of cattle where the city of Great Falls now stands. At that time he helped to trail about a thousand head of cattle from Cascade to the Poplar river agency. He rode the range and worked for several early day outfits Perkins, Sweet, Selbern, Kingsbury, and others and passed through Choteau, then called "Old Agency," in 1879. About two years later he bought a small band of sheep and started ranching for himself on Dupuyer creek. He enlarged, improved and maintained that place until the present day, and it has been a gathering place for relatives and friends of the family for many years. He also operated a large modern ranch west of Bynum.
Mr. Jones went back to Missouri and was married about five or six years after his arrival in Montana, the bride's name being Lilly Conley. Four children were born to the union, the eldest, Kyle, resides at Bynum and is charge of the bank there. A daughter, Mrs. Wilma Bental, resides at Portland, Ore., but has been with her father during his illness. A son, Paul, was drowned in Dupuyer creek when he was a child. A third son, J.R. "Sandy" Jones, was killed in an accident on his ranch near Pendroy about eight years ago.
Mr. Jones served in numerous public capacities and was always active in the affairs of the republican party. Though not continuously, he served altogether about 20 years as member of the board of county commissioners of Teton county. Two years ago he declined to become a candidate for re-election.
