Bob joined the Army and served in WWI. After he was gassed, he spent 3 years at Ft. McHenry hospital in Maryland, receiving treatments and trying to recover. One day he decided that exercise would be helpful. So he got a bicycle and rode…to Los Angeles, CA! He set a new record: 3200 miles in 38 days.
He then got a job as a lineman with Edison Electric Co.
His girlfriend at that time, Margaret Merriken, missed him so much that she got on a train and met up with him, and married him out West. They had two children: Helen and John.
For recreation, Bob played Badminton. He became very good, and eventually started promoting the game as the director of the California Badminton Association.
