Chief Cone rites set for Tuesday
The funeral of retired Bennington Police Chief Francis J. "Frank" Cone, a native of Bennington and resident of 107 River St., who died at the age of 74 Friday evening at Bennington Convalescent Center after a long illness, will be held at 10 am Tuesday at St. Francis de Sales Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.
A prayer service at 9:30 at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home will precede the funeral Mass.
Burial will follow in the family plot in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington.
Chief Cone headed the local force from 1940 to 1954 and was a veteran of 38 years servic3 on the squad. He was also a former president of the Vermont Police Association and a former president of the New England Police Chiefs' Association.
A 1951 graduate of the FBI Police Academy in Washington, D.C., he was born July 14, 1901 to Martin and Mary (Greehy) Cone and received his early education in the Bennington schools.
In 1933 he joined the Bennington Police Department and served as patrolman for nine years before becoming police chief. He led the force for 14 years, and retired in 1971.
Chief Cone was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church, belonged to Bennington Council 307 of the Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the 4th degree K of C.
The Vermont Police Association honored him with a plague following his retirement in 1971 and dedicated the 1971 association yearbook to him. The local police department and other law enforcements agencies also presented him with a plague at a party in his honor at Mt. Anthony Country Club in February 1972.
Besides his widow, the former Julia Brazell, whom he married Aug 2, 1926; he leaves four daughters, Mrs. P.A. Leisinger of Cincinnati, Ohio; Miss Patricia Cone of Framingham, Mass., Mrs. Helen Ahearn of Bennington and Mrs. Frances Anglin of Brockton, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; a brother, Robert Cone of Bennington; several nieces, a nephew; many cousins.
Friends may pay respects at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, when the family will be in attendance.
A wake service will be conducted at the funeral home this evening at 8.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the St. Francis de Sales Church Renovation Fund through the funeral home office.
