Early Wednesday morning, Mr. James Pierce, an old and respected citizen of this place, died at the residence of Wm. Freeman, corner of Baltimore and Breckenridge streets, from a paralytic stroke, aged 89 years and 11 months. He was a native of Maryland and came here from Baltimore, with John McFarland, when he was 21 years of age. For many years he carried on butchering on the property where he died, afterwards kept a grocery, which he closed out about 15 years ago, and retired from business. He was married to Miss Margaret A. McCurdy, of this place, who died some years ago. He is survived by two sons, J. Shaw, and Wm. H. H., and one daughter, Mrs. Horace Alleman, of Selinsgrove. Deceased was a prominent member of the M.E. Church, and the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. W. A. Carver, of that Church. He was also a member of Gettys Lodge of Odd Fellows, whose officers attended the funeral. The bearers were John H. Sheads, Geo. W. Strickhouser, Wm. Rupp and Andrew Utz. Internment at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday morning.
