Wendell was one of nine children born to Anders Ingevaldsson and his wife Helena Andersdotter. Under the patronymic system then in use, his birth name was Vendel Andersson but he was later christened as Vendel Ingevaldsson in the Skallerud Kyrka (reputed to be the oldest wooden church still in existence). The font used for his christening is still in use and dates from 1679.

The family emigrated in 1890 leaving Skallerud parish for Goteborg on April 25, 1890. On May 16, 1890, they left Goteborg for Hull, England, on the S/S Ariosto. From Hull they went by train to Liverpool and from there sailed to America where names were "Americanized." An obituary in the Mankato Ledger on July 15, 1908, said he died at "303 North Broad street, Monday, July 13th, 1908, of spinal meningitis, aged 27 years [sic]. Funeral will be on Thursday." The Free Press reported the funeral would be "from the residence of Mrs Fred Widell on Broad street, and at 2:30 o'clock from the Swedish Lutheran church on Main street."

Still young, Agnes, his widow, was financially unable to care for their five children. Elaine moved in with a grandmother, Hazel and Kenneth were put in an orphanage, Lloyd was adopted by Mr and Mrs Otto Ziegler and four-month-old Dorothy was adopted by Mrs and Mrs Alva Gaylord. A news article said that on November 10, 1909, in the district court, Lloyd and Dorothy were "adopted into the families of two prominent farmers of Decoria. . . . Neither of the families have children of their own. The little tots are indeed fortunate in being adopted by such good people."
