John Noel West is listed as an unmarked grave in Lot 122, Row 17. The information was provided by William Earl Platt in November of 1982. Here is what the Fillmore Cemetery book records:
"From south corner of the McDade Lot (iron fence), a lot marked with square and round cement cylinders or squares. Near SE corner of the McDade lot and to the north, the unmarked grave of [West, John Noel, husband of L. Spurling]. There are no birth or death dates listed.

*John Noel West first shows up in Louisiana in the 1850 US Federal Census for Bossier Parish in the household of his brother-in-law, James Norton Platt and his older sister, Rebecca West Platt and their children. JNW is 18 years of age and it is indicated on the census that he was born in South Carolina about 1824.

*On 7 March 1855, JNW married Lavisa [often spelled Louisa] Caroline Spurlin in Bossier Parish. She was also enumerated in the 1850 census for Bossier Parish with her father, Ely Spurlin, mother, Nancy [Funchess] and little brother Thadeus Minter Spurlin. She was born in Mississippi, as was Thadeus, while her father was born in Georgia and her mother in South Carolina.

*JNW entered into the dry goods business with Albert W. Spurlin but by the fall of 1859, the sheriff had seized their property for a sheriff's sale. The goods seized included "Lot. No. 24 in Bellevue; an 11 year old slave child named Willis aka Tobe; one bay horse; a buggy and harness; their stock of dry goods and seed cotton.

*At the same time as the sheriff's sale, JNW runs for Clerk of Court for Bossier Parish against A. A. Abney and loses.

*The Bossier Banner newspaper of 9 March 1860 reported John Noel West was the principal of the Bellevue Male and Female Academy in Bossier Parish near the center of the parish at the time.

*The 1860 US Federal Census for Bossier Parish enumerated J. N. West as head of household with schoolteacher as occupation; L. C. West as his wife and two daughters: Mary A. West and R. P. West [possibly a namesake for JNW's sister, Rebecca Platt West]. Thad M. Spurlin is also living with them along with another boarder, Mary A. Smith, aged 21.

*Thad joins the Confederacy enlisting on 1 Nov 1861 in the Louisiana, Company B Infantry. His service was long and harrowing according to his records:
Spurlin, Thaddeus M., Pvt. Co. B, 19th La. Inf. En. Dec. 11, 1861, Camp Moore, La. Present on all Rolls to Feb. 28, 1863. Roll July and Aug., 1863, Absent, sick, at Greenville, Ala., May 26, 1863, order Surg. Philson. Rolls Sept., 1863, to Dec., 1863, Absent, wounded, since Sept. 20, 1863, Battle Chickamauga. Rolls Jan., 1864, to April, 1865, Present. Roll of Prisoners of War, C. S. A., Paroled Meridian, Miss., May 13, 1865. Res. Bossier Par., La. He moved to Texas and died in Fannin County in 1919.

*There is no record indicating if JNW fought in the Civil War. He disappears from newspaper articles and census records after that. Also, daughter RPW does not appear in records either after the 1860 Bossier Parish census.

*In the 1880 US Federal Census for Kaufman County, Texas, Lavisa is enumerated [name of Caroline] as the wife of Columbus W. Harrell. Mary Ann West is listed as a step-daughter at the age of 22. Other children are listed: Joseph, age 24; Clifton, age 21; Maggie, age 11; Corine, age 9; Aline, age 6 and Bennie, age 1. Joseph and Clifton were born to Columbus' first wife. They are on the 1860 US Federal Census for Bossier Parish. A daughter, Mary C. West, was born in 1863 [unknown mother, but Columbus is listed as her father on her death certificate. She was married at the time of this census so she was not enumerated with the Harrell family.

*When Columbus W. Harrell died in 1883, he is listed as being survived by a companion and several children. However, Lavisa [died in 1884] is buried in Weaver Cemetery in Terrell, Texas, with CWH and one of his sons, but her headstone states her name as Lavisa Caroline Spurlin WEST. There's a possibility they were divorced or separated at the time of Columbus' death in 1883.
