Irene B. (Alpers) Alexander, 92, Lincoln, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2014. A devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, Irene was also a naturalist, birder, teacher, volunteer, farmer, camper, hiker, collector, traveler, sports fan, and family historian.

She was born to the late Henry and Emma (Fix) Alpers, on Oct. 17, 1921. Irene graduated from Clatonia High School in 1939 and earned a degree in history from the University of Nebraska in 1943. She worked in Syracuse as a teacher before being wed in 1946 to her surviving husband, George.

Irene retired from the Pioneers Park Nature Center following 25 years of passionate service, having shared her knowledge and love of nature and birds with hundreds of children and adults.

In addition to her husband, George, Irene is survived by three children: Margaret (Daniel) Moravec, Anne (Rick) Wagner, and James (Susan) Alexander; five grandchildren; one great grandson; sister Betty Srb; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Pioneers Park Nature Center for maintenance of the Bird Garden that bears her name. Service celebrating her life on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Christ United Methodist Church.
