Jesse Kapuahelani Kalawaia, Jr returned home to our Heavenly Father July 12, 2015. He was born May 21, 1931, in Salt Lake City, UT to Jess K Kalawaia Sr and Alice Lotheal Galland (divorced). His father married Merry Echo Briggs.
Jesse graduated from South High School, attended the University of Utah, and graduated from the LDS Business College with a degree in Accounting. He married Lurene Going Maughan April 20, 1956 (divorced). He married Shirley Spry (deceased) Oct 16, 1984 in the Jordan River Temple.
Jesse served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hawai'i. He and his wife Shirley served as missionaries in the Denver Colorado South Mission. For 12 years he served as a Priesthood Leader for the Emerson Ward at The Hillside Rehabilitation Center. Jesse was a member of the Hawaiian Civic Club and gave many years of service to the Hawaiians in the Salt Lake area. Jesse also served four years as Treasurer for the Mainland Council of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs.
He is survived by his children, Wendy Helani Kalawaia, Michael Jess Kealii (Jeannie) Kalawaia, Evelyn Kanani (Karl) DeBrine; step-daughters, Vicki Lynn (Bill) Scott, Diane (Henry) Colby; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lynda Kalawaia DuRan and Nancy (LaRell, deceased) Miller Baker.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 20, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Emerson Ward, 808 East Roosevelt Ave, Salt Lake City, UT. Friends may call Sunday evening 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S. 2300 East, and at the church Monday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
