Patterson Moss was the father of Commodore Perry Moss born at Dakota, Humboldt, Iowa, and Mary Silvannus Moss born at Franklin, Decatur, Iowa. Commodore married Annie Mariah Lish. Mary Silvannus married Joseph Cornelious Walsh.

Patterson's wife, Lavina Hoskins, died in February of 1860 while they were still in Iowa.

He emigrated to Utah with the Lewis Brunson Company in 1862. The company was made up of 212 individuals and 48 wagons. The departure began at an outfitting post in Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha). His wife passed away before the journey. His brother-in-law (Lavina Hoskins brother) also traveled in the Lewis Brunson company, along with his wife and four children, so he had extended family with him.

With his two motherless children Patterson walked across the plains in 1862.


He settled his family in the Kaysville area and built a dugout home for them to live in. He farmed there for several years. He married Sarah Matthews and was sealed to her 2 Feb 1869 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City. He died in April 1891 and is buried in Portage, Box Elder, Utah.
