ACKERMAN, Jacob C., farmer, prominent citizen and Civil War veteran, of Biggsville, Ill., is of an old New Jersey family. He was born in Hudson County, that State, May 12, 1839, a son of Jacob and Gertrude (Cubberly) Ackerman. His parents came to Warren County, Ill., in 1857, he having preceded them two years earlier. They owned an eighty-acre farm in Biggsville Township, but bought another having improvements, and some years later removed to Kirkwood, Ill., where Mr. Ackerman died in 1879, and his wife June 2, 1808. He was born March 12, 1798. They had children named: John, Thomas, Mary, Sophia, Gertrude, Joseph, Jane, Cornelia and Jacob C. All except Gertrude, Cornelia and Jacob C. are dead. Gertrude, widow of Daniel Waldron, lives in St. Louis, Mo. Cornelia, widow of A. C. Van Riper, lives in Chicago, Ill.
At the age of sixteen years Jacob C. Ackerman began active life for himself as a farm hand in Warren County, Ill. Later he worked two years on farms in Henderson County, and after that worked a rented farm eight years, then bought 113 acres of land in Biggsville Township. This farm was broken and had some improvements, and a month after he took possession he sold sixty acres and bought eighty acres adjoining the remainder of his original farm, onto which he moved and where he lived till 1893, when he removed to Kirkwood. His son, Frederick B. Ackerman, manages the farm. Like his father before him, he does general farming and raises horses, cattle and hogs.
The following data concerning the children of Jacob C. Ackerman has been made available to us: Henry V. lives in Henderson County; Frank is a citizen of Albuquerque, N.M.: Mary married Edward A. Johnson, of Warren County, Ill.; Frederick B., of Biggsville Township, is one of the rising farmers of Henderson County.
Mr. Ackerman is a Presbyterian and has been an elder of his church since 1905. In his political affiliations he is a Democrat. He is a Mason and a member of George Crook Post, Grand Army of the Republic, of Kirkwood. He enlisted in March, 1864, in the Eleventh Illinois Cavalry and served in Tennessee and Mississippi till he was honorably discharged, in September, 1865.
