James F. Austen, 92, of Leesburg, formerly of Wayne County, passed away Sunday morning, July 12, 2015, at his home.

Born Feb. 1, 1923, in Wayne County, the son of Ebright and Iva Tacy Faber Austen and was married to Marjean Frank Austen, who passed away in 1981.

Surviving are his wife, Janet Bentley Davis Austen; daughters, Lou Ann (Don) Grossett of Indianapolis, Becky (Phil) Piper of The Villages, Fla., and Janet (Robert) Johnston of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Scott (Kim) Piper, Kent Piper, Lynn (Jay) Pirkle, Bobby Johnston, Kyle (Michelle) Johnston; great-grandchildren, Nathan and Luke Piper, Haley and Hunter Pirkle, Pearl Marjean Johnston; stepchildren, Carol Davis, Bruce (Tammy) Davis and Denise (Dan) Fraysier; step-grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah) Davis, Danielle (Jesse) Happ, Derik (Tracy) Melson, Nicole (Adam) Haines, Clayton and Lauren Fraysier; great-grandchildren, Cameryn and Tyler Davis, Jackson and Jude Happ, Ava Melson, Brant, Blacke and Hallie Haines; a sister, Doris Whitmyer of Naples Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and a great friend, "Abbey" his yellow lab.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ada Petralean, Treva Bruce, Cora Bruce, Nancy Shank and Gail Snyder; and brothers, Emmett, Lloyd and Merle Austen.

Jim was employed by Mobile Oil Company for 12 years prior to being appointed Postmaster of Shreve for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He was active in the Shreve community and Triway Athletic boosters and served as president when the football field was built.

A World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps for four years, he enjoyed flying and had his private pilot's license. An avid sports fan he enjoyed playing softball in the Shreve and Wooster area for many years. He was active in the National Association of Postmasters, serving as state president 1976-77 and served as a trainer postmaster.

A was a member of Killbuck VFW and American Legion, Shreve. He was a graduate of Shreve High School and a member of the Leesburg United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Littleton Funeral Home, Sabina. Graveside services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Shreve.

Memorials are suggested to Fayette County Hospice or a mission of the donor's choice.
