Mary Jane Abbott's parents were Hayes Abbott (1794-1853) and Elizabeth Snow (1804-1840). She moved from Ohio, by wagon with her father, brother and sisters, after the death of her mother. The family settled in Des Moines County, Iowa, where she met and married Jacob Norris in 1852. She was a real pioneer wife moving first to Davis County Iowa and after the Civil War to Appanoose County Iowa.
